Games for an Elephant Themed Birthday Party

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Elephant scavenger huntInspired by our gorgeous range of Elephant themed birthday party paraphernalia, including cupcake toppers, your guests will love these elephant themed birthday party games!

(Please note these games are specifically designed so children under 5 can play but we are sure even the older kids will want to join in!)

The Trumpet Game

Have all the children sit in a circle and practice together making an elephant sound. Choose one child to stand in the middle of the circle with their eyes closed. While the child’s eyes are closed, you walk around the outside of the circle and pat one child on the head and that child then makes the elephant sound. The child in the middle can then open their eyes and guess which child made the sound.

(If the children are older than 4, you can have all the children make any animal noise and only one child make the elephant sound. The extra noise makes it more challenging!)

The Elephant Walk Game

Split the Group into two teams. Have each team line up single file. The first child has one arm forward like an ‘elephant’s trunk’ and puts his second arm under his leg like the ‘tail’. The child behind the leader grabs hold of the ‘tail’ with his ‘trunk’ and has his other hand under his legs as the ‘tail’. This continues down the end of the line. On the word “Go, elephant, go!” each team must race to the designated finish line. If at any time the elephant chain breaks they must return to the beginning and start again.

Elephant Scavenger Hunt

Once you’ve downloaded a couple of pages of this elephant sheet we’ve created, all you need to do is cut out the images of the elephants and then using blue tack or sticky tape, stick these around the party room or backyard. On the word “Go, elephant Go!” the children then race around to find the hidden pictures. The one who finds the most wins.  Click on the link and when the picture appears just save it to your computer.

Elephant Race

This game sounds simple but is a lot of fun and more challenging than it sounds. The object is simple – roll a peanut across the ground to the finish line. The fun part is the peanut must be pushed with the nose! (Double check with parents first for peanut allergies and replace with an M&M)

Yesterday I told you about the ingredients in prepackaged foods and what they can do to your children’s health.  Every child wants a fun birthday party full of all the foods they love so here are a few tips on how they can have their fun and no one will suffer for it.

A few hints and tips:
1: Instead of purchasing pre-popped or microwave popcorn, you can avoid a few very nasty additives by simply purchasing the popping popcorn and popping it the day before the party. Even the “natural flavoured” microwave popcorns tend to have nastys in them, so are best to just be avoided all together. Save yourself some money and pop it yourself. To add some flavour to it you can sprinkle over some icing sugar or some salt and butter, but most children will eat it plain too.

2: Frankfurt sausages and most shop bought sausages are little chemical cocktails. The Frankfurt sausages are known to contain a combination of the worst kind of artificial colours and preservatives, these chemicals have been linked with causing asthma, learning difficulties, behavioural issues and much more. “normal Sausages” are also commonly found to contain more fillers than meat, as well as artificial colour, preservatives and MSG. My advice when purchasing sausages in to find your local wholesaler and purchase gluten free and organic, this can be a little more expensive, but if you buy in bulk you will save lots of money and they are much healthier.

2: At every single party I create, I always make sure there is either a fruit platter or some fruit skewers. These are so bright, colourful and healthy and are always the first thing to be eaten off the table.

3: Fairy bread can either be a relatively safe food, or one of the most toxic items on the table, depending on which ingredients you purchase for it. Your fairy bread will be perfectly safe as long as you buy preservative free bread, butter NOT MARGARINE and instead of buying the brands of sprinkles which are coloured with coal tar dyes that are derived from petrol, choose the brands of sprinkles that are coloured with natural ingredients, from food. Or simply grate some organic chocolate over the top. Yummy!!

4: Instead of purchasing cordials and soft drinks which are generally coloured with coal tar dyes and have artificial preservatives added, why not purchase preservative free fruit juice and natural mineral water? You can create your own fizzy drinks by simply pouring two drinks into a jug. I also always serve water at my parties, children can get dehydrated very easily while running around at parties so they should be encouraged to drink as much water as possible.

5: When purchasing lollies it is very easy to source the natural options, most supermarkets now sell the natural coloured and flavoured options, many shops even sell organic lollies and chocolate too and they are very affordable.

6: If you are buying corn chips, there is no doubt that the better tasting ones are the ones coated in MSG, but you need to remember that MSG and all other forms of MSG are like a magical powder, they are colourless, odourless and flavourless. They are simply a chemical that has been created in a lab to make your taste buds believe that what you are eating is yummy. Food manufacturers choose to use MSG instead of real flavour because it is cheaper and highly addictive. You will notice that if your children eat a lot of products with MSG in them, they will start to refuse to eat “blander” foods, as their taste buds are no longer being satisfied with the chemical they are used to. When purchasing corn chips, I always choose the plain ones, or the certified organic brands, they are a little blander but they are safe and they are what real corn chips taste like.

Book Themed Parties.

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Books are where imaginations begin and a book-themed party is an easy and fun way to create a birthday memory that will last a lifetime.

Tips for a Book Themed Party:

 1. Choosing a Book Theme: Pick a book that allows for simple to make costume options for parents. Princesses, the circus, super heroes and animals are always popular choices.

 2. Invitations and Decorations: If you’re not the crafty type don’t worry! Our collection of goodies makes it easy to put together complete sets of pre-made party invitations and decorations.

 3. Games: It’s easy to put a twist on traditional birthday party games to incorporate your book theme. Here’s a few ideas based on some of our books:

  • The Chocolate Game: This classic game is one where even the grown ups will want to join in! To tie in with your book theme choose a related costume e.g. a cape and mask for a Super Hero party
  • Musical Chairs: Rather than just walk around the chairs have the children act as the character they are dressed as e.g. ballerinas would twirl
  • Reading the Story: Practice reading the story before hand to pick up key areas where you can interact with your young audience. Let the birthday boy or girl have a seat at the front next to you. After all with a personalised book, especially on their birthday, it’s all about them.
  • ‘Hunt for the Cake’ will see the children following clues to find the birthday cake. Try to incorporate the theme in your clues e.g. “The circus master has hidden the cake!”

4. Food and Cake: You don’t need to exhaust yourself with making sure every piece of food is themed. Arranging fruit on a platter or icing plain biscuits into a character shape are quick and easy ways of bringing the theme to the table. Then just add in the Birthday cake and your child’s favourite party foods.

Let’s Have a Sleepover Party

Posted by: | Comments (0)

For most 10 to 17 year olds slumber parties hold some of the best childhood memories. And for most parents the thought of hosting one has them reaching for the nearest glass of Merlot.  We’ve put together our top 10 tips to ease the fears and make sure your child and their guests have a night to treasure for a lifetime.

1. For first time sleep overs talk to the other parents, before you send the invitations, and let them know exactly what the night will entail. Addressing any concerns before hand may prevent one of the guests not being able to attend. This may mean agreeing not to watch certain movies or to listen to certain types of music.

2. Make sure you have a list of parent’s phone numbers and ask about any allergies the child may have.

3. Include ‘your favourite stuffed toy’ on the list of things to bring so no one will feel silly bringing their special comforter.

4. Have your child play host and show their friends where everything in the house is.

5. Build the atmosphere of a ‘sleepover party’ by having guests arrive in their pyjamas.

6. Make sure an even number of guests are invited so no one has to feel like the ‘third wheel’.

7. Avoid midnight hyper activity by serving sugary snacks earlier in the evening and savoury ones closer to bedtime. Similarly plan games for earlier on and use a movie to settle them down.

8. Give an appearance of privacy but make your presence known by restocking food and asking guests if they are having fun. This lets them develop their independence while feeling safe knowing you are nearby.

9. Bed time should be at least an hour before you actually want them to go to sleep. Half the fun of a sleep over is giggling under the sleeping bags and being told at least once to ‘go to sleep’ and then giggling some more.

10. Around 10am is the perfect time for pick up. This will give them time to have breakfast before they go but enough time at home to settle back into their routine.

.What are your top tips for a fun sleepover?

Coffee Filter Butterflies

Throw a fun and memorable birthday party with a difference and include some craft activities. The kids will love it and be able to take their own masterpiece home.

Make sure you either write on the invites to wear older clothes or use water-washable paints and glues so good party clothes don’t get ruined.

Depending on the group and age of your party-goers, you can either focus on one simple activity or include art and craft as a theme of the birthday party.

You will find some really clever craft Kits for Kids over at Kaboodle - just perfect for parties.

Here is a lovely little activity based for ages 3yrs and over that I found at EHow.  They have some other great suggestions there too, so go over and have a look.

Coffee Filter Butterflies

Instructions:

  1. Give each child a white paper coffee filter or 2 if you have the small ones , a tray of watercolours (the cheap ones in little circle plastic containers you can buy cheap discount stores), a cup of water, a paint brush, half a black pipe cleaner and a paper plate.
  2. Using the paper plate as a tray each child decorates the coffee filter in a rainbow  butterfly of colours. Smaller kids might need help with mixing the colours so their butterfly doesn’t end up looking like a mess!
  3. The filters will soak through and the colours will bleed together, so lay them down to dry on the plates.
  4. Help accordion-fold each filter, bend the pipe cleaner in half and clip it over the middle of the accordion.
  5. Twist the pipe cleaner to fasten and make two antennae and fan out the wings.
  6. Tie a loop of string around the twisted part of the pipe cleaner so the little artist can hang the butterfly when they go home. The watercolours can be then added to the party bags to take home.

What a fun way to keep little ones happy and occupied during the party.  They love to create so this idea should be a big hit.

Setting a Party Table

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Have you ever been to a party where something obvious, like the plates, were forgotten?  Not an altogether disaster, because the shops are usually not too far away, but it can cause unnecessary stress and delays in the otherwise perfect planning of a party.

Here is a checklist of what you need when setting a party table:

(Once you have chosen a theme (eg, animals, fairies, pirates etc) you can select all the other items you need to set the table from there).

Centrepiece
Start with an eye-catching centrepiece – one of my favourites is the Space Cadets Centrepiece – it will most certainly create the wow factor. You could also consider using the cake as a centrepiece, but you need to think about how long it will be sitting on the table before it is cut (beware of tempting little hands wanting to try that irresistible icing!).

Tablecloth and napkins
You will also need a tablecloth or two, depending on how much food and the layout you are choosing.  Add some bright and bold colours that match your decor using napkins.

Cups, cutlery, plates and place cards
If it is a sit-down party try and keep the setting simple, with the most basic fork and spoon (only consider knives if the kids are old enough to handle them),one cup and a place card. If the party is more casual, with a table or two laid out with party food any cutlery will probably go out the window as we know kids prefer to use their hands to eat whenever they can get away with it!

Whether it be the food or table décor, ask yourself whether your child is going to enjoy it or not and remember – it’s all about having fun!

A Favourite Party Biscuit

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Funny Faces

This is a really fun biscuit perfect for any age birthday party. You can even make the decoration part of the party activities, the kids will love it!  It has been a favourite biscuit for many of us for years.

Ingredients:
1 packet of Arnott’s Milk Arrowroot biscuits (oval shaped) or Marie biscuits (round shaped)
2 cups icing sugar
2 tablespoons water (approx)
Food colouring (for the funny face, any colour you like!)
Decorations such as: sprinkles, 100s & 1000s, jellybeans, “teeth”, cachous (edible silver balls), liquorice strips (for mouths and hair), popcorn and smarties

Method:
Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Slowly add enough water to make a spreadable paste. Add a few drops of food colouring to create the colour of the face you want.

Spread a little icing onto each biscuit. Use the lollies to make the eyes, nose and face. Then add sprinkles or 100s and 1000s for hair, beards etc.

You can keep these in an airtight container if you want to make them ahead of time.

Seeing Spots?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

It’s easy to choose a theme for your childs party.  You don’t have to go into costumes and characters.  Pick something simple.  Why not have a spotty party?  You can’t get much easier than this.

Spotty food, spotty decorations and spotty games are all fun and easy to create.

The food is easy. 100′s and 1000′s make spotty fairy bread and can decorate the tops of ice-cream or biscuits.  Maltesers, smarties, fruit balls, meatball and even cheese balls are all round tasty bits.    Decorate your cake and cupcakes with spots and serve them on spotty plates

Thread colourful pom poms together for a spotty garland for decoration.  Stick round stickers onto your glasses to add spots.

Ask your guests to wear something spotty.  They can dress in spots or wear a bandana made of spotty material.

Twister is the ultimate spotty game but you could create games using spotty ribbons or be clever and design a ‘pin the spots on the dalmation’ game.  Go crafty and let the kids make animals out of pom poms.

Finally, why not make a spotty cake?  Bake it in the round!  Imagine one big spot in the centre of the table just waiting to be eaten.  You can buy ball shaped cake tins to help you get the shape. ( They are often used to create sports ball cakes)  Just ice it all over with your chosen colour and add spots of different coloured icing or round jelly lollies.

Seeing spots can be fun.  All you need is a little creativity.

Fruit Slushies

Posted by: | Comments (1)

It doesn’t seem to matter what season it is, kids love slushies.  Those slushies from corner stores look as though they are full of sugar and food colouring but they still sell quickly when the school kids walk past.

Slushies can be relatively healthy and make a great party drink in the warmer weather especially for pool parties and outdoor events.  They stay cool for a long time (even if they lose their slushiness).

This recipe came from the Sunbeam site and it sounds delicious as well as healthy.  Tuck this one into your party recipe book for summertime.

Fruit salad slushie – Serves: 2

Ingredients:
500g frozen fruit salad
200g tub 97% fat-free frozen passionfruit yoghurt
2 cups mango nectar

Method:

1. Place all ingredients in the jug of a blender. Blend until just smooth and combined. Serve.
